AmazonBasics 6.5-Foot/2-Meter Composite AV Cable for Apple iPhone/iPad/iPod

composite cableCustomer Reviews:* This is a very good product if you have an iPhone or iPad and want to connect it to a TV, stereo, etc. It is an absolutely great tool to have when you're travelling with kids. Let me explain.First, what it does: This composite cable has an Apple 30-pin connector on one end and RCA plugs for left sound, right sound, and video, as well as a USB plug on the opposite end. For those of you not sure about plugs, let me explain. The 30-pin connector is what you have on most Apple products except the most current ones. It is a very thin, long connector that plugs into Apple products like the Iphone 4, Iphone 3, etc. "RCA" plugs are those large, round yellow, white, and red plugs that generally are on the back of your TV and stereo. The yellow plug transmits a video signal, the red and white transmit the left and right side of the stereo sound (I can't remember which color is which side, but just make sure you plug the red plug into the red socket, etc., it's not brain surgery). USB is USB, generally for your computer. So basically what this cable allows you to do is output sound and video from your iPhone, iPod, iPad to a stereo or TV. Why is that so great, especially for travelling with kids? I'll tell you why. If you have Netflix, your kids can watch children's programming on your hotel TV after about 30 secs worth of set up. Brilliant. (Sorry, Amazon Prime doesn't offer analog output via the 30-pin connector, so that service won't work with this product--not brilliant). Also, the USB plug can be used to charge your Apple product (even while streaming) so long as it's plugged into a powered USB socket.Couple of caveats:(1) As mentioned above, not all apps allow for audio/video output via the 30-pin connector, so this will not work for all Apps. I have used it extensively with Netflix though.(2) Some have complained that the USB portion of the cable is too short and therefore requires some creative USB extension cording to charge their product while outputting video. I have not had to do that yet. The main TV I've used this on had a little USB socket in it to display photos, etc. To my surprise, that socket was powered and directly adjacent to the RCA plugs on the TV, so it worked great. Many have mentioned that the Apple version of this cable (which is way more expensive) has a much longer USB section. If that's a problem for you, then consider the Apple version, but for me, the money wasn't worth it.Bottom line: Yes, I am very glad I bought this; yes, I would buy it again; yes I would recommend it. * At a fraction of the cost of the Apple product, this is a great travel accessory. I load up movies on an older iPod and then no fumbling around with DVDs when we are driving. composite cable
