Kelty Double Wide Basecamp Pad

Basecamp PadCustomer Reviews:* I hemmed and hawed over which sleep pad to purchase for camping here - we'd previously borrowed the neighbour's air mattresses (C*oleman), which sat about 4" off the ground. The trouble with the ones we borrowed was that we kept "rolling to the seam," which was critically uncomfortable at 3 in the morning. :PI checked out another brand of self-inflatable camping pad and this one - and we pulled the trigger on the Kelty. It was slightly less expensive than the other brand, and we liked that it was big enough for both of us, instead of connecting two pads together to get the width we wanted. That said, we headed to the low desert for some "autumn camping" and found that this system was great, but seriously needed 'topping off' before retiring for the night. We opened the valves when we set up our tent & bedding, but that first night, it didn't feel like we were lifted off the ground at all. To borrow a phrase from Samwise Gamgee, "Everywhere I turn there's a great dirty root sticking in my back." :oThe next morning, I thought to open the valves again and was shocked by how much air was sucked in to the pads. Again, that evening, I re-opened the valves and topped off the pad - not nearly as much air was sucked in that evening as had been in the morning, but there was some air captured. And sleeping that night was SO much easier - I never felt any 'great dirty root' sticking in my back; indeed, I never felt the ground at all. I was impressed and awoke much more comfortable than the previous day.We car-camp exclusively, so I can't comment as to whether this would be too heavy to hike in. But I can tell you it was entirely worth the purchase price and the space it takes when packing the car for a camping trip. It is SO much better than an air mattress for our purposes! :) * I love this pad. Obviously, it's large so it's for car camping and it takes up quite a bit of space. The material prevents your bag from slipping off. I bought this because my daughter rolls all over the place unless RIGHT NEXT TO ME. This pad made it possible to get a good nights sleep and not lose my child in the mix of blankets and sleeping bags. Self inflating is great but I did have to give a few puffs to top it off.Only con for me is that it was difficult for me to roll it back up.We've used this a few times, each trip at least 2-3 nights and it's been great. When I've had company stay with me they've used the pad on the floor and slept comfortably.I started using the thermarest blankets vs sleeping bags because I could cover the entire pad and the two of us with that system and it is very comfortable.
